Some of the most enjoyable times in our homes are spent in the kitchen. The following tips are “foods for thought” on making your kitchen a healthy and eco-friendly zone. As a “side dish”, an eco-friendly kitchen can save you money and simplify your life.
1. Invest in fan-forced ovens. They are the most energy efficient.
2. Check out the new range of “combo” ovens that work as both oven and microwave. Note that microwaves can cut energy consumption by up to two-thirds.
3. Look into eco-efficient dishwashers. They are becoming popular as technology improves, with some using less water than traditional dishwashers and hand-washing in the sink.
4. Replace toxic chemical cleaners with healthy, eco-friendly cleaners.
5. Replace antibacterial hand soaps with an organic brand or just simple, regular soap. Studies have shown that antibacterial soaps are no more effective than simple soap and water.
6. Add organic foods to your diet.
7. Use eco-friendly wood cutting boards instead of glass and plastic cutting boards. Studies have shown that plastic cutting boards, with their cracks and crevices from use, encourage bacteria growth.
8. Try hard not to use plastic bottles and storage containers. They may be convenient but they also contain chemicals that can leak into your food and drink. Use glass, ceramic, or stainless-steel storage instead.
9. Reduce paper towel and napkin use.
10. Replace your dishwashing sponge as often as possible. Maybe try quick-drying dish rags.
11. Replace non-stick cookware. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and/or perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are found in Teflon. These chemicals have been linked to the production of hazardous fumes at high temps. Healthy alternatives include stainless steel, cast iron, copper and glass.
12. Sweep and mop instead of vacuuming when you can.
13. Recycle!
