If you’re like most homeowners, you spend a good bit of time indoors during the winter months and into the spring months. So here are some effective ways to improve the indoor air in your home, inspired by WebMD and TheWayToGo:
- Use non-toxic, natural cleaning products.
- Get house plants – many house plants actually remove dangerous toxins from the air.
- Ventilate high-humidity areas like kitchens and bathrooms to prevent mold and mildew growth.
- Dust and vacuum more frequently.
- Leave shoes at the front door to avoid outside matter and pollutants from entering.
- Wash bedding at least biweekly to kill dust mites.
- Open the windows every couple of hours to ‘clear the air’ (especially on a day that’s not too cold).
- Control humidity in rooms (no higher that 50%) – to minimize growth of some biological contaminants.
- Clean or replace air filters regularly to avoid indoor air quality deterioration.
- If possible, replace wall-to-wall carpeting with bare washable flooring and area rugs.
- If not possible, do your best to keep carpets and floors clean. A mop-up is better than a sweep-up as it relates to your floors.
- Keep your home a no-smoking zone if you can.
